One of the greatest defensive players in NFL history isn’t finished yet.
Aaron Donald is coming out of retirement and returning to the Los Angeles Rams for the 2026 season, the team announced Sunday. Donald, 35, hasn’t played since retiring following the 2023 season, but had been seriously exploring a comeback throughout the summer.
The financial commitment suggests this isn’t merely a ceremonial return. Donald is reportedly signing a one-year, $20 million contract that can reach $30 million through incentives.
And the timing couldn’t be much more intriguing.
Los Angeles already made a massive win-now move by acquiring Myles Garrett this offseason. Donald’s return now gives the Rams the possibility of putting two multi-time Defensive Player of the Year winners on the same defensive front, alongside a younger group that includes Braden Fiske and Kobie Turner.
Donald certainly isn’t returning with anything left to prove individually. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year and eight-time first-team All-Pro retired as one of the most dominant interior defenders the league has ever seen.
This is about another championship.
There will naturally be questions about how quickly Donald can return to NFL form after more than two years away. But the Rams have been evaluating that question themselves. Donald worked out for Los Angeles earlier this month, after which Sean McVay said the former All-Pro “looked great.”
If Donald can still provide even something close to the disruption he created before retiring, Los Angeles may have assembled the most intimidating defensive front in football.
Aaron Donald didn’t come back to extend his résumé. He came back because the Rams have a legitimate opportunity to win another Super Bowl.
And suddenly, that opportunity looks even better.
