D’Andre Swift, Rome Odunze Injury Update: What We Know Before Bears Week 1

Two of Chicago’s most important offensive players left Thursday’s practice early, creating immediate concern less than two weeks before the Bears open against Carolina. Early indications are encouraging on Rome Odunze, while D’Andre Swift’s status remains the bigger question.

The Chicago Bears made it through most of training camp without major issues involving two of their most important offensive weapons.

That changed Thursday.

Running back D’Andre Swift and wide receiver Rome Odunze both left practice early with apparent injuries, putting their Week 1 status under an immediate spotlight as Chicago prepares for its Sept. 13 opener against the Carolina Panthers.

The good news is that neither situation appears catastrophic based on the information available Friday morning.

The bad news is that one of them remains much less clear than the other.

What Happened to Rome Odunze?

Odunze exited during the first half of Thursday’s practice after appearing to favor his right leg or foot.

He initially tried to remain on the field before the Bears’ training staff pulled him from the session. Odunze was able to walk off under his own power, and preliminary indications afterward suggested the injury was not considered serious.

That is particularly important given his history.

Odunze dealt with a stress fracture in his right foot during the 2025 season, so any issue involving the same side naturally creates concern.

For now, however, this looks more like something worth monitoring than a reason to expect him to miss significant time.

Is Rome Odunze Playing Week 1?

The Bears have not officially announced Odunze’s game status.

Chicago will not be required to issue its first formal injury report until Sept. 9, and head coach Ben Johnson is not scheduled to address the media again until next week.

Still, the early reporting is encouraging.

Unless there is a setback over the weekend, Odunze currently appears more likely than not to be available against Carolina.

That would be important for Caleb Williams.

Odunze remains one of the central pieces of Chicago’s passing game after recording 661 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season.

What Happened to D’Andre Swift?

Swift’s exit looked more concerning in the moment.

He left near the end of Thursday’s practice after a rushing attempt from near Chicago’s own goal line and appeared to be dealing with discomfort around his midsection or core area.

There was some encouraging follow-up reporting suggesting Swift may have simply been dealing with cramping, potentially related to the hot and humid conditions during practice.

But until Chicago provides an official update, that remains less certain than Odunze’s situation.

Why Swift’s Status Matters Even More

Chicago already has uncertainty behind him.

Backup running back Kyle Monangai is dealing with a knee injury and has been described as week-to-week. That leaves Roschon Johnson as the other established option if Swift is limited or unavailable.

That makes Swift’s health especially important.

He topped 1,000 rushing yards last season and scored 10 total touchdowns, giving Chicago both a dependable early-down runner and a receiving option out of the backfield.

If Swift misses time, the Bears would not simply be replacing carries.

They would have to redistribute part of the offensive structure around Williams.

What This Means for Week 1 Against Carolina

There is still plenty of time.

Chicago’s opener is more than a week away, and both players now get the benefit of a weekend without practice before the Bears begin formal game preparation Monday.

That makes this a situation where patience matters.

Odunze appears to be trending in the right direction.

Swift requires more information.

The Bears do not need either player proving anything in early September practice. The goal is having both available when the games count.

Whitmore’s Read

Right now, I would separate these two situations.

Odunze: low concern.

Everything reported so far suggests Chicago avoided a major issue.

Swift: moderate concern.

The cramping explanation would obviously be reassuring, but the way he exited practice and the uncertainty behind him at running back make this worth watching closely.

The next meaningful update should come once Chicago returns to the field Monday and begins preparing for Carolina.

Until then, there is no reason for panic.

But there is absolutely reason to pay attention.
