The Chicago Bears may have to wait until shortly before kickoff for the official answer on Rome Odunze.

Odunze enters Sunday’s opener against the Carolina Panthers listed as questionable with a right calf injury after being limited in all three practices this week. Despite the designation, the third-year receiver made his own expectation clear Friday:

He plans to play.

Odunze said he feels ready after dealing with what he described as a relatively minor calf strain and indicated that he expects to be on the field when Chicago opens its season in Carolina.

PUBLIC REPORT DETAILS

Odunze (calf), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Carolina, is expected to play, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

What Happened to Rome Odunze?

Odunze initially left practice early last week after developing discomfort in his right leg.

Given that he missed five games last season while managing a stress fracture in his foot, there was immediate concern that the new issue might be related.

The Bears later clarified that Odunze is dealing with a right calf injury, not another problem with the foot.

Head coach Ben Johnson initially characterized Odunze as day-to-day and expressed optimism that he could return in time for Week 1. Odunze subsequently participated on a limited basis throughout the game-week practices.

That progression is encouraging.

The fact that Chicago never downgraded Odunze to a non-participant during the week also suggests the team believes he has a legitimate chance to play.

Is Rome Odunze Playing Today?

Nothing is official yet.

Odunze remains questionable, and Chicago will release its inactive list approximately 90 minutes before the 1 p.m. ET kickoff.

But Odunze sounds considerably more optimistic than his designation.

He told reporters Friday that he feels good and plans to play, while describing the calf issue as essentially muscle fatigue that the team has been managing carefully.

That makes him appear more likely than not to be active.

There is, however, one interesting development worth watching.

Bears Elevate Another Wide Receiver

Chicago elevated Kaden Davis from the practice squad Saturday.

Under normal circumstances, that would be a routine Week 1 depth move.

With Odunze questionable?

It becomes more interesting.

The Bears already carry several receivers on their active roster, so adding Davis gives Chicago additional insurance if Odunze cannot play or if the team decides to restrict his workload.

It does not necessarily mean Odunze is trending toward being inactive.

But it does give the Bears another option if they decide Sunday morning that playing their starting receiver is not worth the risk.

Why Odunze Matters to Caleb Williams

Chicago enters 2026 expecting the passing game to take another meaningful step.

That places Odunze in an important position.

He caught 44 passes for 661 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games last season despite dealing with the foot injury. He then added 88 yards across two postseason games.

The Bears believe there is considerably more production available if he stays healthy.

Odunze gives Caleb Williams a large outside target capable of winning vertically and working through contact. His presence can also prevent defenses from focusing too heavily on Chicago’s other weapons.

If Odunze plays, the Bears can open the season with much closer to their intended receiving rotation.

If he sits, the offensive distribution changes.

Who Benefits If Odunze Doesn’t Play?

The biggest opportunities would likely go to Luther Burden III and tight end Colston Loveland.

Burden would be in line for an expanded role in the wide-receiver rotation, while Loveland could become an even larger part of the intermediate passing game.

Chicago could also use more formations involving multiple tight ends or backs rather than simply attempting to replace Odunze snap-for-snap.

The goal would be preserving the structure of Ben Johnson’s offense without asking one young player to become Odunze immediately.

That is easier said than done.

Chicago Has Other Injury Questions

Odunze is not the only Bear carrying a questionable designation.

Safety Xavier Woods is questionable with a groin injury.

Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent is dealing with a back issue, potentially putting veteran Case Keenum in position to serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Williams.

Offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo has also appeared on the injury report.

Chicago otherwise enters the opener relatively healthy.

That gives the Bears little reason to take unnecessary chances with Odunze if there is meaningful concern about the calf.

Everything Odunze has said suggests he expects to play.

His practice participation supports that.

So does the tone Chicago has used throughout the week.

The Kaden Davis elevation adds just enough uncertainty that I would still wait for the inactive list before calling Odunze a lock.

If he is active, I would also watch his snap count rather than simply whether he starts.

Chicago does not need Odunze playing every offensive snap in September.

The Bears need him available for the entire season.

If that means using Burden and the rest of the receiving group more frequently Sunday, that’s a reasonable trade.

But unless something changes during pregame warmups, the arrow appears to be pointing toward No. 15 being on the field.

Odunze is officially questionable. He personally sounds ready. The final answer arrives shortly before kickoff.
