Detroit Red Wings Continue to Work Two Fronts

Jim Biringer of Full Press Hockey and Full Press Media joined Jon Burton on Nashville Sports Radio to discuss the situation with Dylan Larkin, Simon Edvinsson, and the Detroit Red Wings.

Jon Burton: “We’ll get you out of here on this. The situation in Detroit with Dylan Larkin, no GM. What do you see happening there, short- and long-term?”

Jim Biringer: “All right. Well, short term, they have Sean Horchoff as the Interim GM. Kris Draper is the Director of Pro Scouting now, so and he’s been scouting a lot of games this year. Also, you have Simon Edvinsson needs a deal. RFA. He was over in Sweden. He needs a new deal, and he is looking to get paid like (Zeev) Buium did, a little over $9.5 million in a season. Detroit’s original offer was a bridge deal, and look, he’s not budging on his preference for a trade right now. But Detroit wants to sign him.

As far as Dylan Larkin goes, it’s status quo. He wants to go to nine to 10 teams that are contenders. If he opens up his list to Canada, obviously Montreal will come calling, and he would go up there, maybe New Jersey (is on the list), maybe some other teams, but the priority is Simon Edvinsson, followed by Dylan Larkin. But at least Larkin showed up to play. (Connor) Hellebuyck is sitting at home thinking about coming back, so at least Larkin’s playing for Detroit.”

Full Press Hockey Note: Dylan Larkin’s 10-team trade list includes the original five teams: the Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, and Tampa Bay Lightning. He added the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche, and Utah Mammoth.

While some are surprised that New Jersey is on the list, given his connection to the Hughes family and the Devils could use him for depth and moving Jack Hughes to the wing to be a more complete team, Larkin’s $8.7 million fits perfectly into their cap, but the money would have to be shipped out too.

No surprise to the Hurricanes there, given the way GM Eric Tulsky is so aggressive and wants to be in on everything. Same with the Utah Mammoth. But for Larkin, it still feels like Minnesota or bust, though Quinn Hughes could factor into where Larkin goes.

As for Edvinsson, he prefers a trade, though none of the parties involved have said much about it. But the player is frustrated with how long this is taking. The Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Seattle Kraken, San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Carolina Hurricanes have shown interest in him. Some believe Carolina sent him an offer or was considering one.

Edvinsson wants $10 million to $11 million on a long-term deal. Detroit wants to sign him, but within their cap structure. But Edvinsson has a deadline of December 1st, or else he can’t play this season. He wanted this done last year, but it wasn’t done. It is a mess in Detroit that could have been avoided.
